وقد اثارت الركلة التي وجهها اللاعب الهولندي نايجل دي يونغ الى صدر الاسباني شاب الونزو استهجان الاوساط الكروية مما انطوت عليه من خطورة واستهتار
وكان يوهان كرويف، اسطورة الكرة الهولندية، قد شن هجوما لاذعا على لاعبي منتخب بلاده وادائهم في المباراة النهائية واصفا اياه بالضد من كرة القدم
وقال كرويف لصحيفة ال بيريوديكو الاسبانية لسوء الحظ، لعبوا لعبا قذرا جدا
واضاف: قدموا عرضا بشعا وسوقيا وخشنا وانعزاليا. افتقر اداؤهم للجاذبية ولا يمكن وصفه بكرة قدم اصلا. لو انهم فازوا لكان ذلك جيدا لهم، ولكنهم خسروا
وسجلت المباراة النهائية رقما قياسيا جديدا بعدد البطاقات الصفراء التي اصدرها الحكم، متفوقة بذلك على مباراة الارجنتين والمانيا في بطولة عام 1986 التي زخرت بست بطاقات صفراء فقط
كما كانت المباراة النهائية الاسوأ من ناحية تحلي اللاعبين بالاخلاق الرياضية في الدورة باسرها التي شهدت 64 مباراة
